Tony De Meur, the British musician and comedian who became widely known under the stage name Ronnie Golden, has died at the age of 78.
De Meur was the founding frontman of The Fabulous Poodles before later becoming an established figure in Britain’s alternative comedy scene. His career also included television appearances, songwriting, live performance and collaborations with some of the country’s best-known comedians.
His death was announced by his partner, film producer Grace Carley, who said he died suddenly and peacefully in September 2026.
A Career That Crossed Music and Comedy
De Meur first gained attention as a musician during the 1970s after forming The Fabulous Poodles.
The band developed a distinctive mixture of rock music, humor and theatrical performance. Their work earned them appearances on BBC television, including The Old Grey Whistle Test, and the group released three albums during its original run.
The Fabulous Poodles also toured internationally and performed alongside major acts including Meat Loaf, Tom Petty and Chuck Berry.
The band’s music was influenced by performers such as The Who and The Kinks, while De Meur helped give the group its own unconventional identity.
