The family was already familiar with the challenges of serious illness. Aiden had previously undergone more than 80 surgeries at UPMC Children’s Hospital.

According to Fletcher, the physician addressed them by their first names, regularly asked whether they had questions and made an effort to ensure they understood what was happening with Aiden.

Evans also made an effort to keep Fletcher involved after the father had to return to work while his son remained in the hospital.
Fletcher said Evans communicated with him through FaceTime during morning team rounds, allowing him to remain connected to his son’s care despite being away from the hospital.
For Fletcher, the gesture demonstrated the kind of personal consideration Evans brought to his work.
Rather than making the family feel like another case, Fletcher said the doctor helped them feel seen and supported during a frightening period.
